The Stoneham Transportation Advisory Committee (STAC) is a flagship committee of the Stoneham Community Action Network (Stoneham CAN). We offer Stoneham stakeholders the opportunity to work together to advance local accessible and equitable mobility choices.

ABOUT US:

  • STAC is made up of municipal, legislative, business, and residential community members.

  • We welcome and encourage anyone interested in improving and expanding access to all types of mobility options for Stoneham to join us at any of our monthly meetings. Learn more below about our Values, Goals and Objectives and STAC’s History and Accomplishments.

  • STAC meets monthly on the first Thursday of the month from 8:00-9:30AM via Zoom with occasional in-person meetings. Check out our Events Calendar for additional information and the Zoom link.

VALUES, GOALS, & OBJECTIVES (2022-2027)

STAC’s 2022–2027 Values, Goals, and Objectives outline a comprehensive approach to improving mobility in the town of Stoneham by prioritizing safety, accessibility, equity, and sustainability. Rooted in values of collaboration, inclusivity, and long-term thinking, STAC seeks to enhance multimodal transportation for all through strategic partnerships and planning.

Our goals align with regional and federal initiatives, including the MAPC’s 2050 Metro Common and USDOT's strategic objectives, and focus on five key areas:

  1. Improving safety for all travelers;

  2. Expanding and integrating mobility services;

  3. Strengthening infrastructure;

  4. Increasing public awareness and engagement;

  5. Supporting local economic vitality through accessible and reliable transportation options.

STAC’s History & Accomplishments

HISTORY & ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

  • STAC formed in 2015 as an ad hoc group to support transportation-related recommendations from a strategic plan for Stoneham Square. Since then, the group has partnered with local and regional leaders to effect an impressive amount of change in a short time.

  • Accomplishments include:

    • extending operating hours of the MBTA Route 132 bus,

    • supporting a Complete Streets policy and re-design proposal,

    • supporting a regional Northern Suburban Mobility Study,

    • completing a ZIP code study with MassRIDES to analyze commuting patterns,

    • supporting the Council on Aging’s successful effort to add a new accessible van through the Community Transit Grant Program so that seniors complete their routine medical care.

    • supporting the acquisition of a grant to fund a free electric shuttle service, Circuit, for the Town of Stoneham. More information on the shuttle can be found here.

  • In 2017, STAC was honored with dual APA Massachusetts awards for Social Advocacy and Citizen Planning. Also, in 2019, STAC won a national APA Gold Award for a Grassroots Initiative.
