OUR MISSION

Our mission is to serve as a catalyst and resource for resident-driven, grassroots initiatives that support social and environmental sustainability, strengthen community connection, and enhance the livability of Stoneham, MA. We provide essential support, such as administrative infrastructure, volunteers, partnership, visibility, and access to funding, to help local projects grow in capacity and impact. Our programming celebrates Stoneham’s rich history and uplifts its growing diversity with a forward-looking spirit. Together, we empower residents to bring creative, innovative ideas to life and make Stoneham a vibrant and accessible place to live, work, and play.

COMMUNITY NEED

Stoneham is a community in transition, shaped by changing demographics, new housing, and evolving needs. Although residents recently approved the town’s first tax override—an important step toward stabilizing services—it provided limited relief, and budget pressures continue to strain schools, the library, and public works. At the same time, a growing and more diverse population is increasing demand for inclusive, accessible programming that fosters connection, civic engagement, and belonging. With municipal systems constrained, community-based nonprofits like Stoneham CAN play a vital role in strengthening social infrastructure.

Stoneham has strong civic energy, with residents launching grassroots efforts to care for public spaces and support one another. However, many initiatives lack the funding, administrative capacity, and coordination needed for long-term impact. Stoneham CAN fills this gap by providing structure and support, so resident-led projects can grow and endure, rather than fade due to burnout or limited resources.

A BIT OF HISTORY

Stoneham Community Action Network (Stoneham CAN) was founded in 2015 as a grassroots effort to foster civic engagement and neighborhood vitality. In 2017, the organization obtained 501(c)(3) status as the Stoneham Community Development Corporation. In January 2025, it adopted the Stoneham CAN name and launched a new brand to reflect its current role: supporting resident-led initiatives and strengthening community connections in Stoneham, MA.

Over the past decade, Stoneham CAN has grown from an informal neighborhood group into a trusted local organization that fosters civic engagement, community connection, and quality-of-life improvements. Its work is grounded in the belief that strong communities are built through access, shared responsibility, and meaningful connection among residents.
