STORIES THAT STAY WITH US

Our 2026, Season 6 Book is…

They Called Us Enemy

A graphic novel & memoir by author George Takei, Justin Eisinger (Author), Steven Scott (Author), & Harmony Becker (Illustrator)

Stoneham Reads presents They Called Us Enemy by George Takei, a compelling graphic memoir about his childhood incarceration in Japanese American internment camps during World War II. Forced from their home, Takei’s family endured harsh conditions, including confinement in a converted horse stall and later a guarded prison camp.

Selected to highlight an often-overlooked chapter of American history, this book explores the systemic racism behind the camps, the resilience of families, and the lasting consequences of “othering.”

As we read together, we invite the community to reflect on how experiences of displacement, uncertainty, and resilience - central to many immigrant stories - continue to shape our collective understanding of what it means to belong.

A Companion Children’s Book…

My Lost Freedom

In this book, Takei aims to help children today understand what it feels like to be treated as an enemy by your own country. It’s a story of a family’s courage, a young boy’s resilience, and the importance of staying true to yourself in the face of injustice.
