Welcome to Stoneham Reads 2025

In 2025, our fifth year, we focused on a theme that centers on both our town and the planet, as well as sustainability and environmental stewardship, for Stoneham Reads: Small Steps to Sustainability.

Our book selection for 2025:
📗 “Year of No Garbage” by Eve O. Schaub 📗

“Year of No Garbage: Recycling Lies, Plastic Problems, and One Woman's Trashy Journey to Zero Waste” takes a humorous but pointed look at one family’s attempt at going “zero waste” to reduce their impact on the planet.

Both hilarious and sobering, Schaub’s witty recounting of her family’s challenges focuses an important lens on the amount of waste, particularly plastic, that we all produce each day.

While going “zero waste” may not feel possible, the book offers some reasonable and achievable options for reducing environmental impact and increasing sustainability.

Through the year, Stoneham Reads hosted events and shared resources that allowed the community to find small steps they can take to increase their own sustainability in a way that feels manageable and meaningful.

See below for our selection of recommended books on this topic, which includes different genres and age groups. We will also be hosting events and activities tailored to explore these themes.

Through collaboration, we can strengthen our community and ensure a healthier, more sustainable environment for all.

PAST EVENT: Sunday October, 5th, 1-3pm, 2025

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Stoneham Reads is once again hosting a community read-in to shine a light on the growing issue of banned and challenged books. Every year, thousands of attempts are made to restrict access to books in schools, libraries, and bookstores.

Book banning is not just about removing a title from a shelf—it threatens the very foundation of our freedom of expression. When voices and perspectives are silenced, our ability to think critically, understand one another, and engage in open dialogue is diminished.

Don’t have a banned or challenged book in hand yet? Check out the National Coalition Against Censorship’s RighttoRead recommendation and dive into “Chains” by Laurie Halse Anderson.

Join us each year as we show our support for protecting the right for all stories to be told.
